THE ARCHIPELAGO OF SULCIS

The archipelago of Sulcis includes two major islands and different smaller islands, only one of which is populated. The major islands are those of Sant’Antioco (10890 hcts) and San Pietro (5130 hcts), along with the near Isola Piana (20 hcts). The small islands of Toro, Vacca, Corno and Ratti are uninhabited.

San Pietro Island Sant'Antioco Island [The arcipelagus of Sulcis]

Travelling across the South-West islands of Sardinia implies the experience of different emotions and discoveries: the typical Sardinian setting in the town of Sant'Antioco is in contrast with the perception of a strangely Ligurian environment both in Calasetta and Carloforte. Even the most careless visitor cannot help noticing other important anthropologic differences: the inhabitants of Sant’Antioco wholly belong to the Sardinian culture; those of Calasetta and Carloforte, instead, have proudly saved their traditions and costumes despite the immission of foreign cultural elements (brought by such people like the Piedmontese, the Sardinian or the Sicilian that, from time to time, have settled there). On the contrary, the newly-come are now part of the local communities, having acquired the uses and habits of these.
